Date of WMSHE Meeting: March 17, 2004

Meeting Location:  Bronson Methodist Hospital           

 

Educational Program:    Our thanks to Bronson Methodist Hospital for hosting the meeting and our guest speaker, Irvin Poke, AIA, with the Michigan Bureau of Construction Codes and Fire Safety who provided a Bureau update.   

 

Business Meeting:

 

1.   Opening Prayer:  James Keyzer opened the meeting with a prayer.

2.   Meeting Chaired by:  James Keyzer.

3.   Introduction of new members:  Everyone at the meeting introduced themselves.

     It was noted that Dave Schoonbeck of Triangle Associates and Bob Swenson of Pine Rest are new members.    

4.   Introduction of Guests:  James Keyzer introduced our guest speaker, Irvin Poke,

       AIA.  

5.   Minutes:  A motion was made and supported, to approve the January meeting minutes.

6.   Treasurer’s Report: Paul Dubbeld presented the March Treasurer’s Report indicating a previous balance of $10,783.28; expenses of $210.00; income of $145.00 and a new balance of $10,718.28.  A motion was made and supported to approve the treasurer’s report. 

7.    Membership Report:  It was reported that there were six (6) new healthcare and one (1) new associate member.  For 2004, we have (32) healthcare and (16) associate paid memberships.  

8.    Codes and Standards:  Mary Wiersma noted that she received information on the 2003 Michigan Barrier Free Design Graphics Manual.  The new manual will incorporate all codes related to barrier free design used in Michigan, incorporating all-new graphics throughout.  Please contact JRH Architects at 517-374-7578, if you’re interested in obtaining copies of the manual.

9.   MHA:  Nothing to report.

10. MISHE:  Discussed MISHE scholarship program that awards up to $250.00 to four (4) different individuals.  Applications should be submitted to John Hohman, MISHE Director or Jim Keyzer, WMSHE President.

11.  NFPA:  There will be a NFPA 70 & 99 Workshop in Grand Rapids on July 22nd and 23rd that’s geared to the healthcare field.  The cost is $395.00 per person.  Additional information will be forthcoming at our next meeting.   

12.  ASHE: Nothing to report.

 

 

 

 

13.  Communications Received by President & Secretary:  John Hohman issued a notice to all MiSHE members that MiSHE is presenting a Spring Event featuring Dan Chisholm.  Dan’s presentation will focus on distributed generation and co-generation issues and review of proposed changes to NFPA 99 – electrical section, NFPA 110 and 111 for 2005.  This event will take place on April 23, 2004 at Sparrow Hospital from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and the cost is $70.00 per person.  For additional information and to register, visit the MiSHE website (www.mishe.org)     

14.  Old Business:  Discussed recruiting more members.  Mary Wiersma said that she

       contacted several nursing homes, but response was not good.   

15.  New Business:  1.) Larry Le Forge spoke to Daniel Forgacs of Strategic Energy

        regarding purchasing electrical power from out of state.  If anyone is interested in

talking to Daniel Forgacs he can be reached at (T) 734-432-2615, (F) 734-432-2612, (M) 517-404-5466.  2.) Mary Wiersma was voted in as treasurer and Jeff Jelke was voted in as secretary.  3.)  Discussed setting up a golf committee for this year’s golf outing.  Dave Schoonbeck will contact Jerry Postma to discuss.         

16.  Next Meeting: Will be on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at 12:00 noon at Wolverine

       Building, Inc., 4045 Barden Dr., SE, Grand Rapids, MI  49512.  Barden is located off of Broadmoor Ave. SE between 44th St. SE and 52nd St. SE.   Our presenter will be Jim Scott, P.E. from the MDCH, Bureau of Health Systems.  Lunch will be served.
