Biography:
Dr. Stout is a major authority in
the world of Legionella and Hospital Acquired Infections. Dr. Stout
discovered the link between the presence of Legionella bacteria in
hospital water systems and the occurrence of hospital-acquired
Legionnaires' disease. She has been instrumental in the development of
detection and prevention strategies for this disease. Her
expertise in the area of Legionella and infectious disease microbiology
has become internationally recognized. She was an invited
speaker at the European Working Group on Legionella Infections (EWGLI)
and the International Legionella Symposium. She is concurrently a
Research Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of
Engineering, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering.
Recent projects include: Eradication of Legionella from hospital
water systems by copper-silver ionization and chlorine dioxide, and the
molecular epidemiology of Legionnaires' disease.
Dr. Stout has authored approximately 80 peer review papers in the area
of Legionnaires' disease, which include papers in The New England
Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, the
Journal of Clinical Microbiology, the Journal of Infectious Diseases,
and the Journal of the American Water Works Association. Dr.
Stout has also authored book chapters on Legionnaires' disease,
including the Legionella chapter in the Manual of Clinical
Microbiology. Dr. Stout is a member of the American Society for
Microbiology. Dr. Stout is also a member of the Committee for the
American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning
Engineers developing Legionella prevention standards for building
engineers.
Presentation Title: Legionella Control in Health Care Facilities - New regulations, and their impact on your facility
Synopsis:
Both ASHRAE and CTI have
released new standards in the control and risk management of Legionella
in cooling towers and health care facilities. What are the implications
for your facility? What are your new legal and moral responsibilities
with this issue. Patrick Racine, a member of the Association of Water
Technologies Legislation and Regulations Committee will review these
changes and introduce Dr. Janet Stout, an internationally recognize
expert on Legionella and Hospital Acquired Infections. She will discuss
the impact of ASHRAE Standard 188 and CTI's Standard 159 on Health Care
Facilities.
